Background: The ongoing outbreak of the recently emerged novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) poses a challenge for public health laboratories as virus isolates are unavailable while there is growing evidence that the outbreak is more widespread than initially thought, and international spread through travellers does already occur.

Mandatory social and physical distancing measures (SPDM) were introduced on 23 March 2020 to attempt to limit transmission. This study aims to understand the research gaps related to COVID-19 and propose recommendations for future research. Methods. We undertook a scoping review of COVID-19, comprehensively searching databases and other sources to identify literature on COVID-19 between 1 December 2019 and 6 February 2020.
